RightScale Optima enables you to analyze, report, forecast and optimize costs across all of your clouds and cloud accounts. With Optima you can:

  • Get visibility into costs across all your clouds
  • Analyze costs by a variety of factors, including cloud provider, account, regions, data centers, applications, users, tags, and time periods.
  • Get scheduled reports on cloud spend delivered to your email inbox.
  • Specify markups and markdowns (discounts) on cloud prices.
  • Create and export reports for chargeback and showback.
  • Forecast and budget for cloud costs by application, team, user, cloud, or other factors.
  • Set alerts when budgets are exceeded or projected to be exceeded.

Connecting Clouds

You will need to connect your cloud accounts to RightScale in order to view cloud costs. If you have already connected your cloud accounts in RightScale Cloud Management, then you are ready to begin using Optima.

Understanding and Setting Cloud Prices

RightScale automatically collects the latest prices for all supported public clouds and uses the prices that were in force at any point in time to calculate costs for that time period. For private clouds, virtualized environments such as VMware vSphere, and bare metal resource pools, you will need to determine your own prices and set instance type prices for each private cloud. Once your private cloud prices have been entered, RightScale will use those prices to show the costs of your private infrastructure.
You may also use markups and markdowns to adjust standard prices. You can define markups and markdowns separately for each RightScale account. Markups enable you to add overhead costs. Markdowns can be used to reflect discounts from particular cloud providers, such as Azure Enterprise Agreement discounts or AWS consolidated billing discounts.

Understanding Your Cloud Bill

The Dashboard in Optima can be used to see your monthly costs across all of your cloud provider accounts. The Dashboard includes costs for compute, storage, networking, databases, applications services, administration and security, and all other cloud services. You can drill down on any cloud account to see specific costs by service.

Analyzing Cloud Costs

The Instant Analyzer in Optima lets you slice, dice, and filter your cloud compute costs on a wide variety of factors (cloud provider, account, region, datacenter, user, tags and more). Collaborate with others by sharing links to your analyses or export reports to a CSV file for use in spreadsheets or financial systems. You can also analyze utilization of your Reserved Instances and utilization of your compute instances to uncover waste.

Scheduled Reports

Optima lets you stay on top of your cloud spend with Scheduled Reports. Use the Instant Analyzer to filter your data (by application, team, user, or any other dimension) and then schedule a daily, weekly or monthly report to be delivered to your email inbox. You’ll get an easy to understand comparison that shows how much your cloud spend is increasing or decreasing.

Forecasting Cloud Costs

One of the challenges of managing cloud costs is forecasting future cloud spend. The Scenario Builder in Optima lets you specify your expected growth in instances for your cloud accounts or workloads. Optima then calculates future spend over three years. You can also forecast costs for new cloud deployments, analyze the impact of purchasing AWS Reserved Instances or calculate the costs of running on a different cloud. Once you’ve created a scenario, you can export the details to your budgeting systems.

Setting Budget Alerts

Variable cloud costs can lead to unexpected cloud bills when users spin up additional cloud resources, applications auto-scale, or users forget to shutdown cloud resources that they have finished using. Budget alerts let you keep control over costs with email alerts when monthly budgets have been exceeded (or are projected to be exceeded).
